The purpose of this study was to investigate the current solid waste management practices at Makerere University main campus. The study was done at the halls of residence and colleges, identifying the associated challenges and proposing a better management system. Despite the efforts of Makerere University to promote proper solid waste management, the quantity and type of solid waste generated, its storage, collection, transportation and final disposal elsewhere had gaps hence a need to carrying out this study. By using a methodology of physical observation and interviews with stake holders, it was found out that the sources of solid waste were; Halls of residence, Offices, Food mess, Photocopy stalls, College laboratories, Canteens and Yard. The research found out that Makerere University generates the following types of solid waste; Food waste (48%), Plastic (24%), Paper (13%), Yard (6%) and Other (9%). In both the halls of residence and colleges, solid waste is stored in plastic cylindrical bins of 60 L water capacity. Collection and transportation is a formal process done by a private company call Hill Top Enterprises contracted by the University under the Estates and Works Department who collect the solid waste every day and finally dispose it to Kiteezi Landfill. Lack of separation at the source, Poor attitudes, less dustbins and improper collection are some of the challenges identified. The study recommends Makerere University to apply modern techniques for the storage, collection, transportation and disposing of solid waste. SWM is neither the responsibility of the university nor community alone therefore a concerted effort from all sides. The availed data from this study shall be forwarded to the estates department of Makerere University as an addition to their wider contingency management plan.en_US
