Experences of market vendors on their work in Kalerwe market, Kampal city.
Abstract
This study explored the experiences of market vendors in Kalerwe market. It mainly focused on the motivational factors both intrinsic and extrinsic, skills needed in operating a market vending business and challenges faced.
The researcher used qualitative methods to capture in-depth information. The study mainly used interview method during data collection on 6 participants where 3 were female and 3 were male for equal representation of all gender in research findings.
It was found out that many market vendors join the market due to the need to earn a living, desire for independence, domestic violence. The main skills required for market vending include but not limited to financial management and communication skills, these are mainly acquired through experiential learning and training from civil society organizations. The challenges mainly faced are high taxes, expensive market stalls, poor sanitation where women share same toilet with men and much garbage, and inadequate capital.The Management in collaboration with KCCA and central government should support the market vendors to improve their standards of living through reducing taxes and price for stalls, providing low interest loan or invest in their SACCOs and also constructing toilets.
