The Lugbara trickster and ananse in the marriage of Annansewa.

Abstract

The purpose of this is study to see how trickster tales are portrayed in oral literature and to see if the portrayal is culturally authentic. This study is based on the two tricksters from the Lugbara community and compared to the character Ananse the spider in Efua Sutherland’s The Marriage of Anansewa. In the cross-analysis the four themes are dominant. One is the cultural authenticness moral threads of misbehavior being punished and intelligence being rewarded The stories perpetuate African stereotypes because they are set in Africa as well as the spiritual aspects of the tricksters are minimized.
