dc.description.abstract With the digital migration of technologies to full Internet protocol (IP) based networks that support increased traffic volume, wider geographical coverage, speed etc.; many challenges are posed requiring research and experimentation. 4G is a wireless mobile communication network that widely uses circuit switched fall back to 2G or 3G for Voice and short message service (SMS) because it is IP based. With the migration of technologies to IP it is necessary to do experimentations to put off the need for fall back thus research on all the parameters involved therein with an example being SMS. Today, testbeds are an essential platform for experimental research and prototype development. They enable researchers to test, validate and assess the performance of new technologies for wireless networks. Open source software available online for students and researchers play a huge role in implementation of testbeds involving Long Term Evolution which testbeds are essential for experimental evaluation as well as for product development. These open source software include srsRAN, Open Air Interface (OAI); in our context srsRAN, is used to implement an open source 4G software radio suite. en_US
