Multicultural society, stress and drug abuse among adolescents

Abstract

This study aimed at finding out the relationship between multicultural society, stress and drug abuse among adolescents. The study targeted 100 adolescents in Rubaga Division, Kampala district among different communities and cultures. Both male and female were sampled and actively participated in the study. The specific objectives of the study were to examine the relationship between multicultural society and drug abuse, to examine the relationship between stress and drug abuse and to investigate the relationship between multicultural society and stress among the adolescents. The questionnaires were designed to measure for multicultural society, stress and drug abuse and they were administered to 100 adolescents using simple random sampling. The hypotheses were tested using Pearson correlation coefficient. Study results showed that there is a significant relationship between multicultural society and drug abuse among adolescents (r=--.294**, p=.022.).Results also shows that there is a significant relationship between stress and drug abuse (r=-.252*, p=.048) and there is no significant relationship between multicultural Society and Stress among adolescents (r=.175, p=.178). The community must re- establish a culturally integrated fabric, only part of which may be related to drug and alcohol use. Efforts to re- establish a culturally integrated community must precede, or at least parallel, the development of a meaningful intervention; efforts must combine basic community cultural values with the most recent advances in treatment intervention.
