Determination of the main factors responsible for rutting of Bweyogerere-Namanve section of Kampala-Jinja Highway

Abstract

Civil and Environmental Engineering is a practical profession, which involves conceiving, designing, building, supervising, operating, constructing, and maintaining infrastructure projects and systems in the public and private sector, including roads, buildings, airports, tunnels, dams, bridges, and systems for water supply and sewage treatment. It also involves applying the principles of science and nature to real life for man’s benefit. The department of civil and Environmental engineering, Makerere University requires that final year students perform a research project largely of their own design and direction in the field of engineering under the guidance of academic supervisors. Students submit a proposal at the beginning and a bound research report at the end summarizing their findings. They also deliver an oral presentation to a panel of examiners describing their research findings – one mini presentation at the end of semester I and a final presentation at the end of semester II. This enables students to learn the art of problem solving through the scientific method of project formulation, data collection, analysis and drawing of conclusions and presenting of the findings through a public defense and technical report.

This report entails all activities carried out by the students from semester I to end of semester II in pursuit of determination of factors responsible for causing rutting along Bweyogerere-Namanve road section of Kampala-Jinja Highway. These activities include background data collection, tests and coring, data analysis, conclusions and recommendations. The project involved acquiring permissions from the various parties involved such as traffic police and UNRA. This aided us with access to Bweyogerere-Namanve road section on the Kampala-Jinja highway in order to obtain traffic loads and carry out coring and trial pit tests. The project was a privately funded activity by the students.
