Assessing post-harvest losses among coffee small holder farmers in Namayumba Sub-county, Wakiso district

Abstract

The study was carried out to analyse the post-harvest losses among coffee smaller holder coffee farmers in Namayumba sub county. The objectives were to explore the types and extent of losses of harvested coffee in Namayumba Sub-county, to determine factors that affect magnitudes of post-harvest losses, to understand the constraints to post-harvest handling of coffee in Namayumba Sub-County. Primary data sources were used which included a questionnaires and interviews. The sample comprised of 51 smaller holder coffee farmers from Namayumba Sub County, Wakiso district. Random sampling technique was employed to compare the view of the smaller holder coffee farmers from five villages which were randomly selected. The data was summarised using MS Excel and regression analysis done using STATA. Data presentation was in form of tables and figures to help interpret the findings and generate conclusions that aided solution to the identified challenges. The research established that education, experience and land size are the significant factors affecting post-harvest handling among small holder coffee farmers. The study recommended for continued knowledge haring and training of farmers about the means and the need to control post-harvest losses of coffee.
