Abstract
This project proposes a comprehensive Data Quality Improvement Plan for Nakasero Hospital, a leading private healthcare facility in Kampala, Uganda, to enhance the accuracy, completeness, and reliability of patient data within its health information systems. Despite the adoption of digital systems, challenges such as inconsistent data entry, inadequate staff training, and lack of standardized protocols persist, compromising patient safety and operational efficiency. The study employs a mixed-methods approach, guided by the Plan-Do-Study-Act (PDSA) framework, to assess current data quality, identify underlying issues, and implement targeted interventions. Key objectives include developing standardized data entry protocols, providing staff training, and establishing monitoring mechanisms. Data collection methods encompass document reviews, data quality audits, staff surveys, interviews, and observations, with ethical considerations ensuring confidentiality and informed consent. The project leverages tools like the WHO Data Quality Assurance (DQA) toolkit and draws on lessons from Uganda’s healthcare system, where data quality issues are prevalent. By addressing these challenges, the plan aims to improve patient care, support evidence-based decision-making, and enhance compliance with regulatory standards at Nakasero Hospital. The findings and interventions are expected to offer valuable insights for other healthcare facilities in resource limited settings, contributing to broader efforts to strengthen health information systems in Uganda.
