A computerised book tracking system (CBTS) for Buganda Royal Institute Library

Abstract

The purpose of this project was to design and develop a Computerized book Tracking system for Buganda Royal Institute Library that tracks and monitors books. The Project objectives were to Examine the current Circulation Register used at Buganda Royal Institute Library for book tracking and monitoring books, to Examine the challenges faced while using the current Circulation Register in tracking library resources at Buganda Royal Institute, to Determine the necessary requirements for developing a Computerized Book Tracking System for Buganda Royal Institute Library and to Design and Develop a Computerized Book Tracking System for Buganda Royal Institute. The study employed a case study research design while adopting a Qualitative research approach. Data was collected through observation, interview and document review methods. Furthermore, samples were purposively and conveniently selected The study found out that, Buganda Royal Institute uses a Circulation Register to track and monitor the circulation of library information resources which results into time wasting, misplacement of books, untimely access to books of interest were the challenges identified. Therefore, a system with user friendly interface, enables real time access to books and with search features to help users locate specific books easily. Access controls and encryption mechanisms should be implemented in the new system to prevent unauthorized access to sensitive and confidential information. The study concluded that, a Computerized Book Tracking System with a friendly user interface would be adopted to reduce time wastage, easily locate the books of users’ interest and with encryption mechanisms such as valid login details to ensure data confidentiality. This study recommended that, Buganda Royal Institute Library should implement this Computerized Book System followed by staff and user training. And the Technical support should also be made available and extension of more information resources to the library should be considered.
