dc.description.abstract This dissertation investigates the prevalence and impact of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) on adolescents and young refugees residing in the Kiryandongo Refugee Settlement in Uganda. The influx of refugees due to ongoing conflicts in neighboring countries has created a complex psychosocial environment that necessitates an in-depth understanding of mental health issues. Utilizing a mixed-methods approach, the study combines quantitative surveys to assess PTSD prevalence and qualitative interviews to explore personal experiences of trauma and coping mechanisms among this vulnerable population. Preliminary findings indicate a high prevalence rate of PTSD among adolescents and young refugees, with contributing factors including exposure to violence, loss of loved ones, and the stresses of resettlement. The qualitative data reveals that many young refugees face compounded challenges such as stigma, lack of access to mental health services, and socio-economic hardships, exacerbating their mental health issues. The study emphasizes the critical need for tailored mental health interventions within refugee settlements and calls for the integration of mental health services into broader humanitarian aid frameworks. By shedding light on the psychological toll of displacement, this research aims to inform policymakers, aid organizations, and mental health practitioners on effective strategies to support the mental well-being of refugee youth. Ultimately, this dissertation advocates for a holistic approach to refugee assistance, recognizing mental health as a fundamental component of overall health and well-being in the quest for stability and recovery. en_US
