dc.description.abstract Profitability of an upland rice production is one of the important criteria to ensure the total amount of rice available at the consumer’s level. This study identified the upland rice production in Busakira sub county mayuge district. The objectives of the study were to analyses the characteristics of upland rice farmers in Busakira Sub County and to determine the factors affecting the profitability of upland rice production in Busakira sub county Mayuge district. The choice of adoption ofupland rice production handling technologies by rice farmer of busakira sub county mayuge district. A cross-sectional survey was conducted among 62 banana growers. Welldesigned questionnaires were used to collect mainly quantitative data from the respondents. The data was analyzed using SPSS (Statistical Package for Social Scientists) version 16.0 statistical package. According to the descriptive statistics generated, the results revealed that females were more in upland rice production unlike the men. Most of the respondents were traders therefore carried out trading as their other economic activity despite rice p r o d u c t i o n . Rice producers allocated their land for rice production in acres. The means of transport used were mainly bicycles and most respondents tend to sell a fraction of their rice after harvesting and they store the other fraction. The Results revealed the mean ages of male and female farmers. Male farmers had the highest mean age at 46.2 years. Female farmers had the lowest at 42.3 years. The average age of the household heads was 44 years which means that most of the rice farmers lie within the productive age group Therefore Rice production is profitable. However the challenges of access to both production and marketing information is important so as to increase profitability of rice production en_US
