dc.description.abstract In the digital era ,social media has become a pivotal element of students lives, re shaping communication and information exchange. Platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and Tik tok are now integral to personal and academic activities. However, while these tools offer significant opportunities for leaning and engagement ,they also present challenges as their use during academic hours can lead to distractions and affect student performance. This study aimed to assess the effect of social media on school performance of students at Makerere University. This stylist utilized a case study design with a qualitative approach, focusing on none undergraduate students from Makerere University. In depth interviews were conducted in English to gather insights. The data were analyzed using ATLAS.ti24 software ,aligning with the study’s research questions and objectives. The study found that social media has a complex impact on Makerere University students academic performance. Predominant platforms include WhatsApp, Facebook, YouTube, Instagram, TikTok, and Snapchat with WhatsApp and Facebook being primarily used for academic communication and information sharing while TikTok and Instagram serve more for entertainment and social interaction. Positive aspects noted include enhanced access to educational resources and support through study groups.However, negative consequences were also significant, with social media leading to increased distractions, procrastinations and reduced academic focus. Students expressed a need for improved management of their social media usage to balance its benefits with its potential drawbacks on their studies. In conclusion, while social media provides valuable educational resources and connectivity for students, it’s pervasive use also poses significant distractions that can adversely affect academic performance, necessitating effective strategies for balancing its benefits and drawbacks. en_US
