Abstract
This study was undertaken to investigate the antibacterial properties and the analysis of the phytochemical composition of the aqueous leaf extract of Vernonia amygdalina against E. coli isolates obtained from mulago Hospital, using the disc diffusion technique. Phytochemicals present included flavonoids, glycosides, reducing sugar, terpenoids and saponins. Crude aqueous extract slightly inhibited the growth of E. coli with an avarage inhibition zone diameter 10±1 at 200mg/ml.Therefore, V. amygdalina has potential bioactive phytochemicals that are responsible for its antibacterial activities and could be used as raw material in the synthesis of antimicrobial drugs.
