Abstract
This study investigates the place and value of ambiguity in selected riddles of the Sabiny people, a Highland-Nilotic community residing in the Eastern region of Uganda. While often viewed simply as children's entertainment, Sabiny riddles are rich, complex, and metaphoric linguistic tools that convey deep cultural values. This study aims to examine how ambiguity is defined as the presence of multiple, unclear, or hidden meanings and is incorporated into these riddles and how this affects their interpretation and significance. Through a qualitative research approach, the study relies on field data collected from elderly Sabiny community members (aged 50+) via interviews, questionnaires, and participant observation to ensure an accurate understanding of the cultural nuances and context of these riddles. Key findings therefore indicate that ambiguity is a central feature that increases the intellectual value of Sabiny riddles, making them engaging mental exercises rather than simple questions. The ambiguous nature of the riddles serves to preserve and transmit Sabiny cultural heritage, values, and beliefs to younger generations by encouraging critical thinking and creative problem-solving. By highlighting how ambiguity functions as a pedagogical tool, the study argues that these riddles are vital for maintaining the linguistic and cultural identity of the Sabiny people in the face of modernization. The research provides a foundation for the documentation and preservation of this oral tradition. The study will use relevant examples and references to the topic to provide insights into the cultural significance of Sabiny riddles and their contribution to the society.
