Effects of covid-19 pandemic on the access to food on households of Walukuba-Masese division, Jinja district

Abstract

The study was conducted in Walukuba-Masese Division, Jinja City, focusing on the Effects of COVID-19 pandemic on the Access to food on Households. During COVID-19 lockdown, many households altered their way of life especially in terms of feeding routines.To some hunger was vast due to lack of sufficient food to sustain the entire household. The study explored the difficulties people faced in accessing food, it reflected on the ways households adapted to the COVID-19 lockdown and its limitations of minimal movements and unemployment. However, the end goal was that even when people had these challenges, still accessibility to food was very key to the study. While conducting the study face to face in-depth interviews were conducted where participants were required to provide knowledge on accessibility to food during the lockdown. This was done until there was no more new information. Key Informant Interviews were conducted with people knowledgeable about the way of life of people during the lockdown with emphasis on food accessibility. Data collected was presented and analysed into themes for clear discussion of findings using content analysis method. All the themes were presented basing on the research objectives and questions. Furthermore, people’s views were recorded depending on their experience during the COVID- 19 lockdown. This was in consideration of the uniqueness in how the respondents were affected. Indeed, this is why there were variations in findings. To some respondent’s accessibility to food was really not hard while to others, it was very difficult. Even regarding government interventions, some expressed gratitude while others despised the government welfare programs that aimed to aid households in accessing food.
