Parenting styles, substance abuse and self esteem among adolescents

Abstract

The study sought to establish the relationship between parenting styles. Substance abuse and self-esteem among adolescents. The study was carried out in a secondary school in Nakasomgola district. 100 respondents were included in the study using the simple random sampling method particularly purposive sampling. A self-administered questionnaire was used to interview respondents, it was divided into sections A bio-data, B parenting styles using the measurement of parent style Questionnaire. B substance abuse, C self-esteem using the Rosen burg self-esteem questionnaire. Data was analysed in SPSS using the person correlation co-effiency and the study results showed that there is a relationship between parenting styles and self-esteem, there is a significant relationship between parenting styles and substance abuse and that there no significant relationship between self-esteem and substance abuse. The results have been discussed and recommendations made that a deeper study be done looking specifically at the different parenting styles in relationship with the other study variables among adolescents.
