Tomato output by youths in Busukuma Sub county, Wakiso district

Abstract

This study sought to establish tomato output by youths in Busukuma Sub county, Wakiso District, Uganda. It was guided by the following objectives: To characterize youth tomato growers, establish the output of tomatoes among youths, and to examine the factors that determine tomato output by youth farmers in the study area. The purpose of the study is therefore to assess and document the most important socio-economic and institutional factors that influence tomato output by youths in the study area. In addition to this, it would commit the government to fulfilling its national obligations in the development of the youth in relation to the National development plan, the Uganda constitution and vision 2040. This study employed a descriptive survey design, focused on collecting data to explore, find out and explain the tomato output by youths in the study area. The sample size was 44 respondents. Primary data was collected by administering a semistructured questionnaire. Descriptive and inferential statistics were used to analyze the quantitative data. The study found that economic factors such as limited land affects youth in Busukuma, Further, majority of the youth indicated that they engaged in tomato output due to drop out of school. Access to credit had minimal effects on tomato output by youths. The study recommends that the local government should assist in providing extension services to youth farmers which will improve on their tomato output
