Factors Influencing Effective Participation of Learners in Functional Adult Literacy Programme in Adropi Sub-County Adjumani District. A Case Study of Adropi Sub-County, Adjumani District

Abstract

This study aimed at establishing factors influencing effective participation of learners in the functional adult literacy programme by rural people in Uganda, a case study of Adropi subcounty Adjumani district. Specifically, the study identified social dynamics that influenced people’s participation. It also determined the factors that influenced the facilitation and assessed the perceived benefits of functional adult literacy programme influencing beneficiaries’ participation to achieve the above objectives, a description cross-sectional research was conducted with 50 primary respondents and 10 key informants The study found out that social dynamics that influenced people’s participation in functional adult literacy included decision making, FAL target groups, and community perception of the learners. Factors that influenced facilitation of the programme were mobilization, level of participation. Furthermore, the study revealed benefits of FAL. The study specifically considered two methodological aspects that is personal interviewing and focus group discussion Alternative courses of action were suggested for improving the participation of beneficiaries’ in FAL programme and they included massive sensitization, collaboration with local government and war child Canada to enable the whole community benefit from the programme and establishment of classroom Further research in various areas of FAL programme was also recommended to be carried out in different places.
