The effect of new technology on the prevention of crime in Uganda. A case study of Kasangati Police Division

Abstract

The main objective of the study was to establish the effects of CCTV cameras on prevention of crime in Uganda. This assessment was made by the number of days spent on investigation before and after introduction of CCTV cameras, the number of officers on the crime scene before and after introduction of CCTV cameras. number of cases solved as a result of CCTV cameras and how effective the cameras have been in preventing crime in Uganda. It was established that generally the number of days reduced as a result of introduction of CCTV cameras, the number of officers reduced on the crime scene as a result of cameras, at least fifty percent of the cases were solved as a result of CCTV cameras, and that cameras were effective in prevention of crime through locating criminals and stolen cars and tracking suspects. Lastly, the most common challenges were network problems, power blackout, the camera systems are expensive to install and maintain, lack of enough skilled personnel and limited coverage of cameras in the whole country.
