dc.description.abstract This study explores the factors influencing women's persistence in abusive marriage relationships in Aber sub county, Oyam district. The study focused specifically on the socio demographic profile of women in abusive marital relationships, the factors influencing women's persistence in abusive marriage relationships and the copying strategies adopted by women who decide to remain in abusive marital relationships. The study adopted qualitative research approach. An in-depth interview was conducted with 10 women in abusive marital relationships as a primary respondent and 4 key informants. The study found that the main factors influencing women's decision to remain in abusive marital relationship were; fear of societal judgement, duration of the relationship, care of children, support from friends, economic and financial dependence, fear of regrets, roles of religious and cultural leaders, conflicting thoughts and loyalty. The main coping strategies adopted by women who decides to remain in abusive marital relationships were: prayers, acceptance and surrendering, comfort from children sharing with friends, having hope, faith and patience, letting it go and ignoring it, focusing on their own source of income and cooperation. The study concludes that although the legislation and policy has been implemented by the government and different NGOS to fight violence against women such as Domestic Violence Act which protect the victims and punish the abusers, its effectiveness is hindered by weak enforcement, limited sensitization, cultural norms and lack of awareness. The study recommends, sustained awareness campaigns, community dialogue and culturally effective implementation approaches. en_US
