Religious beliefs, gender equality and women empowerment in Kampala district

Abstract

The study aimed at assessing the roles that religious beliefs are playing in promoting gender equality and women empowerment in Kampala. The study adopted a correlational study design, which was quantitative in nature with a population of 20 participants. Simple sampling random technique was used to draw a sample of 15 respondents from the population. Quantitative data was collected from respondents using self-administered standard questionnaire and entered in the computer for analysis through Statistical Package for Social Science (SPSS) software version 23. Descriptive statistics showed that there more female participants (60%) than male ones (40%), majority of participants were between 26-32 years (53.3%). Pearson product-moment correlation coefficient (r) further indicated that there was a significant positive relationship between gender equality and women empowerment, (r=.354**, p=.000) as well religious beliefs and women empowerment, (r=.547**, p=.000). Therefore, the present study provides a basis and implications for further investigation on religious beliefs, gender equality and women empowerment in Makerere Kavule, Kampala. It was recommended that the local authorities need to form policies that aim at promoting gender equality and facilitate women empowerment in Makerere Kavule, Kampala District.
