Abstract
This dissertation delves into the portrayal of women in Ganda proverbs and its impact on gender equality within Ganda society. Utilizing qualitative content analysis, the research scrutinizes the themes, stereotypes, and messages surrounding women in Ganda culture through a selection of proverbs. The findings indicate a prevalent depiction of women in Ganda proverbs, often characterized by stereotypes that reinforce gender-based power dynamics. Women are frequently depicted as subordinate and reliant on men, while men are portrayed as dominant and authoritative. Additionally, women are associated with negative attributes such as gossip and laziness, contrasting with the positive traits attributed to men like strength and leadership. Ultimately, the study suggests that while Ganda proverbs are valuable for transmitting cultural values, their portrayal of women perpetuates gender disparities. To foster gender equality and challenge stereotypes, it recommends revising or creating proverbs with more inclusive and equitable messages. This research underscores the significance of critically analyzing cultural resources like proverbs to confront gender biases and advance gender equality. By promoting fairer representations of women in Ganda proverbs, society can progress towards a more just and balanced future.
