dc.description.abstract This dissertation thoroughly and carefully looks into the realm of irony within the cultural and linguistic contexts of the Karimojong people. Specifically, it focuses on the presence and significance of situational and verbal irony in selected Ngakarimojong proverbs. By examining the complexities of irony in these proverbs, the study seeks to shed light on the cultural wisdom and communication patterns of the Karimojong community. This research basically employs a qualitative approach, drawing on a compilation of Ngakarimojong proverbs collected through fieldwork and extensive literature review. Through a rigorous analysis of these proverbs, the study identifies instances of situational and verbal irony and explores their functions and interpretations with the Karamojong culture. The analysis is guided by literary and linguistic theories on irony, as well as insights from various African Cultural societies. The findings of this study reveal that situational irony is a prominent characteristic in Ngakarimojong proverbs, often employed to convey moral lessons, challenge societal norms and promote critical thinking. These proverbs present unexpected outcomes and contradictions to provoke reflection and offer insightful commentary on human nature and societal dynamics. en_US
