Enabling ease of access to information about informal jobs using a recommendation algorithm

Abstract

This project aims to bridge the information gap between the youth and the available informal job/work opportunities available. The study used a mixed methods approach to analyze the relationship between unemployment and access to information. A sample of approximately 20 individuals between the ages of 18 and 35 completed an online survey that measured the level of access to information in relation to unemployment levels. In addition, 20 individuals participated in a semi-structured interview to provide more in-depth insights into their experiences with failure to get jobs because of their inability to access information. The results showed a significant positive correlation between unemployment and lack of access to information. However, the interview data revealed that some individuals also reported being able to find informal jobs easily, due to factors such as the need to have a high social connection and support. The findings of this study have important implications for the government, educators, and employers who work with youth. Overall, this study highlights the need for further research to better understand the complex relationship between unemployment, poverty, and lack of access to information about informal employment opportunities.
