Abstract
For a long time, the moon has been an important natural image inboth Chinese and Japanese poetic traditions. In Chinese poetry, the image ofthe moon is often associated with homesickness, longing for loved ones, andreflections on life and society. In contrast, the moon in Japanese poetry isclosely connected with aesthetic concepts such as mono no aware and yūgen, emphasizing subtle emotions and momentary experiences. This paper takesthe moon imagery in classical Chinese poetry and Japanese poetry as the mainresearch object. Through textual analysis and comparative methods, itexamines the relationship between humans and the moon, the representationof time and space, and the overall aesthetic effects in both traditions. The studyfinds that the moon in Chinese poetry often conveys profound and expressiveemotions with social and ethical meanings, while in Japanese poetry it tends tohighlight delicate and implicit aesthetic experiences. This comparison helps tobetter understand the similarities and differences in the aesthetic spirit andcultural traditions of Chinese and Japanese poetry.1Key words: Moon imagery; Chinese and Japanese poetry; comparativeliterature; aesthetic consciousness; cultural tradition.
