dc.description.abstract The study aimed to assess the role of local communities in restoration of Namatale central forest reserve in Mbale. Accessibility sampling was used to select the study respondents. Data collection was carried out using structured questionnaires, observations. Data was analyzed using statistical package for social sciences (SPSS) version 16 through descriptive statistics and frequencies. A total of 60 respondents were interviewed. Most people obtained a number of benefits from the existence of the forest for example obtaining fuel wood and other products and a number of people were involved in the restoration of the reserve for example NGOs, Government and individuals. It is recommended that Associations can be helpful in gaining recognition by the forest management and this can harness opportunities for thriving business. Finally the study recommended that further research will be needed on the motives for restoration by individuals. en_US
