Self Esteem, Risky Sexual Behavior and Substance Abuse among Adolescents

Abstract

This study sought to examine the relationship between self-esteem, substance abuse and risky sexual behavior among adolescents. It was carried out at a certain School in Kawempe division, Kampala district. A total of 250 respondents both male and female aged between 12-21 years were selected by use of purposive sampling technique and a descriptive correlation survey design was used. Data was collected using a purpose constructed self-administered questionnaire and was analyzed using Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS). Pearson correlation coefficient (r) was used to test the significance of the hypotheses. Results indicated that there is no significant relationship between self-esteem and substance abuse among adolescents, there is no significant relationship between self-esteem and risky sexual behavior among adolescents and there is a significant relationship between substance abuse and risky sexual behavior among adolescents.
