The influence of family environment on the self-esteem and underage drinking among the school going adolescents

Abstract

This study aimed at finding out the relationship between the influence of family environment self-esteem and underage drinking among school going adolescents in secondary schools in Kampala divisions both private and government aided schools. The participants who took part in the study were 2000 from all classes. The respondent who took part in this survey were in the age bracket of 13 to 21 years and both female and male were sampled to take part in the study. The specific objectives of the study were to investigate the influence of family environment on underage drinking, to investigate the influence of family environment on self-esteem and to investigate the relationship between self-esteem and underage drinking. The questionnaires were designed to gather information for the research with the purpose of enhancing knowledge on the subject in Uganda and also accomplishing our studies. The hypotheses were tested using Pearson correlation coefficient. The study result showed that there’s no significant relationship between family environment and low self-esteem among school going adolescents. The study findings showed that there is no significant relationship between family environment and self-esteem (r= .045, p= .325>0.01). This is because (p=.325) is greater than the level of significance 0.01 in magnitude therefore, the hypothesis is retained and it is concluded that there is no significant relationship between family environment and self-esteem.
