dc.description.abstract This project addresses the frequent power outages and voltage fluctuations affecting traffic light systems in Uganda, which cause traffic congestion, delays, and accidents. To provide a sustainable alternative power source, a vibration energy harvesting (VEH) system using piezoelectric materials was designed and prototyped. Vibration energy harvesting converts mechanical vibrations from vehicle motion on roadways into electrical energy, offering a green and reliable solution. The prototype, consisting of 16 piezoelectric disks, was tested with hand-induced vibrations and successfully generated over 30V, sufficient to power LEDs, demonstrating its potential to support traffic light systems. MATLAB/SIMULINK simulations showed that the output voltage increases with vehicle weight and speed within certain frequency ranges. This study highlights the feasibility of harnessing ambient vibrations as a renewable energy source for traffic infrastructure in Uganda. Collaboration with relevant government ministries and institutions could facilitate the integration of VEH technology, promoting energy resilience and reducing dependence on unreliable grid power. en_US
