Stylistic devices in selected Paul Kafeero's songs

Abstract

This study addressed the use of figurative language and word choice in order to justify the stylistic devices in Paul Kafeero's songs. Many genres of music have employed stylistic devices such as Kadongo Kamu, pop, hip-hop and many others but Kadongo Kamu has been given less attention yet it can also reach the set objectives and goals of studying and understanding stylistic devices. This study was set to focus on the following objectives; to analyze choices of words, to examine the use irony, to assess the effectiveness of metaphors and how the three are used to generate meaning in the songs. The researcher used a qualitative study as a research methodology for collecting information and used tools like interviews, documentary and context about the selected songs were taken into account for greater understanding of meaning of lyrics. The accounts are six songs; Nantabulirirwa, Olulimi lwange, Kampala mu kooti, Buladina Ndibakooya, Walumbe Zaaya and Nsonda Nnya which are one of Paul Kafeero's popular and successful songs. Findings showed that metaphor is most frequently used to describe meaning in various kinds of concepts. In addition, irony and word choice are significant in highlighting the important messages in the verses.
