The significance of irony in selected Runyankole proverbs

Abstract

The study examined the “The Significance of Irony in Selected Runyankole Proverbs” and particularly how Irony influences meaning in the selected Runyankole proverbs. The study foregrounds how Irony as a literary device influences meaning in the proverbs that will be scrutinized in the study. This study was carried out in western Uganda, Mbarara district where data was collected from my respondent who is a resident of Rwampara and the core objective of this study is to show how irony influences meaning in Nkole proverbs that have been keenly selected for this particular study. The main purpose of the study was to examine and analyses Irony and how it influences meaning in Nkole proverbs. The objectives included; To examine the aspects of Irony in the Nkole proverbs and To show how Irony influences meaning in Nkole proverbs. The research question were; What aspects of Irony are in the selected Nkole proverbs and How does Irony influence meaning in Ankole proverbs? The research methodology used was an embodiment of the sources of data, the mode of data collection, the methods of analyzing the collected data, the research procedure and the problems encountered in the research. Various Runyakore proverbs were discussed and analysed.
