Abstract

This paper makes an in-depth analysis of the UN Security Council’s role in the Responsibility to Protect. The paper highlights the accepted legal considerations for Military intervention under the third pillar of the Responsibility to Protect vis-a-vie the actual geopolitical considerations that have governed military intervention and non-intervention by the five permanent members of the UN Security Council in recent humanitarian crises across the globe. The paper also discusses the impact of this on the principle of the Responsibility to Protect as an emerging norm and on Humanitarian intervention as a whole.
