Abstract
The fourth-generation (4G) network has revolutionized wireless communication, enabling
faster data transfer rates, enhanced connectivity, and improved user experiences. This
project aims to analyze the performance and characteristics of the 4G network, with a
particular focus on the downlink frequency and its implications for signal-to-noise ratio
(SNR) and interference.
Field testing and data collection were conducted around Makerere University to measure
and analyze the SNR values in dB for areas with 4G network coverage. The obtained re
sults revealed SNR values ranging from 10 dB and less, indicating challenging conditions
with potential interference sources. The analysis also unveiled varying levels of interfer
ence in different locations, highlighting areas with high population density and extensive
wireless device usage as hotspots for interference.
Moreover, this project delves into the concept of spectrum occupancy to assess the utiliza
tion of the electromagnetic spectrum in the 4G network. By studying the allocation and
availability of frequency bands, regulatory considerations, and their impact on network
performance, insights into the efficient utilization of the spectrum were obtained.
The findings of this project contribute to a deeper understanding of the performance and
challenges associated with the 4G network, particularly in areas with SNR values of 10 dB
and less. The conclusions drawn from the analysis emphasize the significance of imple
menting effective interference mitigation strategies and efficient spectrum management to
optimize the network’s performance and provide a reliable and seamless user experience.
By investigating the SNR values, interference levels, and spectrum occupancy in the 4G
network, this project sheds light on the factors affecting network performance and offers
valuable insights for network optimization and improvement.
