A research Report Submitted to the Margaret Trowel school of Industrial and Fine Arts in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Ward of Bachelor of Industrial and Fine Arts Degree, Makerere Universityen_US
The study is about influence of paintings at St Francis chapel towards it's community, Makerere University. In this case the researcher found out the background of paintings in churches and the background of St Francis chapel, Makerere University. The purpose of the study was to find out how paintings at St Francis chapel influence the community that is, the students who go there for prayers, staff members i.e. the priests and the surrounding areas. A systematic investigation of this was made by the researcher. The researcher used different data collection methods including observation method, interview method and questionnaire. Tools such as camera, pen, notebook and questionnaire guide were used so as to collect necessary information. The results acquired included plates got through observation and tabulated data which was yielded from the students who go for prayers at St Francis chapel, the priests and the workers as shown in chapter four. A discussion of these results hence followed with attitudes, views, and various categories of people for example the priests and the workers. The researcher found out that a number of students are influenced by the paintings at the chapel. Different people had different interpretations of these paintings and derived different messages from them. Whereas a number of them have a positive view about the paintings, some think they are not suitable to be in a chapel because of the skeleton figures and other figures which some think are weird. As others were influenced by the paintings, saying they were depicting the Bible especially the book of revelation, some were not influenced. And many did not know the existence of the paintings since they do not take their time to look in the chapel's gallery. For they said they only come to worship and so they were surprised to know of the existence of these paintings. However much the research was a success, the researcher faced a number of challenges. Many of the respondents were avoiding to be asked any questions. And others did not know about the paintings making it difficult for the researcher to get required information about the research. At first the researcher was denied a chance to take the required photos from the chapel until a letter was required to show that she was a student from Makerere and was conducting a research about the chapel's paintings, only then she was granted the permission to. In conclusion therefore, as much as a number of the community is influenced by the paintings due to the message the derived from them, many did not know of the existence. The researcher recommends that the chapel should start to sensitize the community about the paintings.en_US
