| dc.description.abstract | The study focuses on craft making and its influence on the lives of women in Masindi. The art craft production has been shunned in the contemporary Uganda and yet it holds so much value. The research therefore interested itself in the few women who practice the craft in order to get relevant information to document to encourage the future generation to embrace the craft and also to generate a communication strategy for community awareness and empowerment on craft making as a reliable source of income. The researcher’s area of study was Masindi Town located in Masindi Municipality in the Western part of Uganda.
The main objective of the study was to investigate the contribution of craft making to the women who produce them and how if many other women acquired the skill it would improve their livelihood. The study also covers the types and nature of crafts the women produce, the materials they use to make them, the role of this activity in their lives, the benefits of making them and the challenges they face in the process and how they overcome them.
The research was explorative in nature, as the researcher got into contact with the concerned people to investigate the different attachments they had with these crafts. Therefore, a qualitative approach was adopted. The information gathered from interviews with some of the individuals was analysed and the researcher realized that if more women would embrace this skill, the lives of many women would change for the better with indication that craft making is a very good source of income.
The study therefore urges that more women should be empowered to adopt the art of craft making to better their lives through earning a living and to also improve the life of the girl child and encourage them to look forward to a brighter future, and if the government could sensitize and support these women, for example, through providing for them free raw materials once in a while to motivate them, more women could be interested and thus reserving culture and eradicating poverty to some level. | en_US |
