The purpose of the study was to analyze the status of the pig enterprise in the Peri-urban areas of Hoima City. The main objectives of the study included; to determine the social demographic characteristics, production characteristics and marketing characteristics of pig farmers in the peri-urban areas of Hoima city. A total of 60 pig farmers were studied in 5 parishes and 13 villages. The research utilized the snow ball sampling procedure where information was collected on the status of the pig enterprise in the peri-urban areas of Hoima City. The data was analyzed using SPSS, version 16. Initially one willing farmer was approached and interviewed who later referred me to another farmer. Majority of pig farmers were male 53.3%, and many of the participants were adults. 41.7% of the respondents were aged between 36-60 years. Farmers in this region mainly rear local breeds of pigs 98.3% compared to 0.7% who rear exotic breeds. This is because local breeds are less susceptible to disea se and do not demand high attention compared to exotic breeds. Production is mainly carried out using the exten sive system (92.3%) because it is associated with little investment costs, management and feeding. Production is mainly motivated by the farmers desire to meet their goals like house hold needs (50%), school fees (50%), building (41.7%) and many others. However farmers were constrained by mainly disease, high price for feeds, poor breeds due to in breeding as well as insufficient investment capital. Therefore regular vaccination, government support to farmers and extension services were some of the remedies suggested by farmers. Designing solutions to constraints of pig farmers would increase pig production and act as a mean to poverty alleviation to rural farmers as well as the economy in general.en_US
