The study was made to examine the appreciation of textile fabrics produced at MTSIFA Makerere University-Kampala. It focuses on the under appreciation of textile fabrics produced at MTSIFA. Textile design and technology course was designed in a specific way to respond of not only to the demands of the local market but also the international market, which succeeded. However, it is pointed out that most of the textile fabrics produced at MTSIFA Makerere University in this contemporary period are under appreciated around Kampala. It has been found that the main factors that determine the appreciation of textile fabrics are colour combination in the artwork, the materials used, the tools and the design process of the textile designer and so structural textile designers should put emphasis mainly on those factors in order for their fabrics to be appreciated. This study has helped structural textile design students to establish an environment that has encouraged them to develop the artistic skills of achieving creativity and uniqueness in their fabrics and to also prepare for professional opportunities. Textile students should explore different techniques and materials used in the production of textile fabrics and they should always have well-designed design processes before starting on their textile projects. The researcher also presented findings of the study based on the following objectives in relation to the study topic. To identify why appreciation of the textile fabrics produced at MTSIFA has affected textile design and technology course To examine the relationship between the conscious organization of elements and principles of design with in the textile fabrics produced at MTSIFA To analyze the relationship between the ability and power of the true quantities of the idea in the mind of the weaver and the design for the textile fabrics produced at MTSIFA. The researcher used qualitative and quantitative data collection methods. Data was collected using the observation method. Primary data was collected from students and lecturers of textile design at MTSIFA by using questionnaires and face to face interviews where by thirty different students of structural textile design and three lecturers of structural textile design and technology course at MTSIFA Makerere University-Kampala were interviewed. Analysis of data employed tabulation where by the data is presented in tables. The findings indicate that most textile fabrics produced at MTSIFA are under appreciated around Makerere University and this has affected textile design and technology course at MTSIFA. This is due to the fact that most fabrics have poor colour combinations and their design processes were not well developed. The study in conclusion suggests that textile designers should improve their creativity by deploying multiple techniques and multiple materials in their artworks.en_US
