dc.description.abstractThe study aimed at evaluating the management of electronic records specifically in Makerere University central registry. The study was guided by five objectives which included: to assess the current status of Record Management Practices in Makerere University central registry, to identify different types of records kept in Makerere University central registry, to identify the importance of the electronic records management Practices, to examine the challenges faced in electronic management of records at Makerere University central registry and to propose solutions for effective electronic records management Makerere University central registry. The study involved three data collection methods which included questionnaires, interview and observation method. The study population size was 1040 from which a sample size of 12 was purposively selected. The researcher used case study design, qualitative approach, descriptive survey and purposive sampling techniques in collecting data. The results indicated that; the registry has never appraised or disposed its records ever since its establishment, records had already filled up the strong room which is no longer accessible and some of the records are staffed in boxes and some piled on the floors. It was recommended that the department adopts an electronic records management policy, train its staff on simple records management standards, adopts a records preservation plan, revive the records office and to appraise and dispose records systematically. The research concluded that the Makerere University central registry department has worked seriously on records management problems though the safety and security of records is a challenge to personnel in-charge of records. Also by records officers in Makerere University central registry records department it was revealed that there were numerous instances where important documents and notes were not kept in secure conditions.  en_US
