| dc.description.abstract | Background; Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) is a slow, progressive irreversible deterioration in renal function. Effective management of CKD depends largely on patients engaging with their diet and fluid regulation. In Uganda, information about knowledge, practices, and challenges among CKD patients is scarce.
Study Objective; This study was aimed at assessing knowledge, practices, and challenges among patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) at Mulago National Referral Hospital Kiruddu about their diet and fluid regulation.
Methodology; This was a quantitative cross-sectional study conducted among 158 clients with CKD at the Renal outpatient clinic and Dialysis unit of Mulago National Referral Hospital Kiruddu. Consecutive sampling method was used in selection of participants. Questionnaire was used to obtain information. Data was entered and analyzed using SPSS version 23.
Results; Majority of the respondents were males (60.8%), age range was 40-50 years. The highest level of knowledge which was good was scored by 102 (64.5%) participants only, 21 (13.3%) participants had average knowledge and 35 (22.2%) had poor knowledge, 135(85.4%) practiced diet and fluid regulation, respondents who experienced challenges while on diet regulation were 89(56.3%) and 67(42.4) % on fluid regulation. Chi-square test was done to find out the relationship between knowledge and practices, and valve showed that there was a statistical significant relationship between knowledge at 0.010 level of significance (P<0.010).
Conclusion and Recommendations; Not every client who was knowledgeable was practicing however health educating clients on every clinic visit will improve their knowledge and practices about diet and fluid regulation especially at the Renal outpatient clinic. Training of the health care team is important so as to provide accurate information to clients. | en_US |
