T Sustainable fertilizer recommendations are critical in ensuring continuity of the soil to produce the desired crop yields to feed the increasing population while at the same time maintaining ecosystem services from the soil in the low input agricultural systems of Uganda. This study was conducted in Mityana district, to determine the effect of vermicompost and inorganic fertilizers on the growtha and yield of Amaranthus spp. The experiment was set up in a completely randomized block design and the recommended recommendations of NPK and vermicompost were applied in combination at three varying amounts of 50% vermicompost+50% NPK (T1), 75% vermicompost + 75% NPK (T2) and 100% vermicompost +100% NPK (T3). Positive controls of 100% vermicompost (T4) and 100% NPK (T5) were used alongside the negative control (CONTROL). The combination of vermicompost and NPK had significant (P<0.05) on the growth and yield characteristics of amaranthus spp. Treatment T4 registered the highest germination percentage while the plant height, leaf area and yield of amaranthus spp were significantly higher from treatment T3 while the control had the lowest growth and yield characteristic. Integrating of vermicompost and inorganic fertilizer improves the crop yield and soil condition. It is therefore recommended that further studies to determine recommendations for other food security crops be done.en_US
