The purpose of the study was to find out the practical approach towards the improvisation of Oil painting materials among 1st Year students 2018/2019 at Margret Trowell School of Industrial Fine Art and guided by the following objectives; discover other alternative painting materials that can be used for Oil painting, experiment other materials and medias to cut on the costs incurred by students at MTSIFA. I used grounded theory to acquire data for analysis, with the help of a non-probability purposive approach for proper selection of respondents. I obtained information from respondents through the use of an interview guide as well as a questionnaire. In the organization of the data, I made use of qualitative data analysis. The findings were; that the alternative painting materials include; cooking oil, acrylics, paraffin, aluminum foil, vat dyes, ink, egg white liquid, natural colored matters and jerry can cut outs. It was concluded that due to the high costs incurred in accessing the oil painting materials, the course unit is regarded to be expensive. Therefore, oil painting students with the knowledge of sourcing compatible yet acceptable oil painting materials like cooking oil, acrylics and dyes, successfully cut on costs. It was recommended that students do carry out research, consult lecturers and source out for alternative materials for example using glass as pallets.en_US
