This chapter explains various key words included in the background of the study in details. Painting A painting is an image (artwork) created using pigments (color) on a surface (ground) such as paper or canvas. According to James Milner Painting is the practice of applying paint, pigment, colour or other medium to a solid surface (support base). The medium is commonly applied to the base with a brush, but other implements, such as knives, sponges, and airbrushes, can be used. The final work is also called a painting. According to Jacob Ingson Origin of painting Painting dates back as early as the Cro-Magnon man existed. These used cave walls as their canvases and durable antler and ivory, not wood and skins as their palettes. The most frequently painted subjects were animals, pictured in brown, red, yellows and blacks from pigments available to the Stone Age artists. Artists depicted these animals which roamed the ancient brushwood forest area: armadillo, red deer, jaguar, capivara, tapir, lizard, and among others The Lascaux Caves, given the nickname “prehistoric Sistine Chapel”, are a cave complex inside SW France adorned with the most famous and impressive cave paintings worldwide. These cave paintings are estimated to be around 17,000 years old. Many of the paintings are located far away from the entrance and have to have been made with the help of candles.
