Evaluation of animal welfare practices among pet (dogs/cats) owners visiting Kiram Veterinary surgery clinic, Ggaba, Kampala

Abstract

Animal welfare refers to the quality of life experienced by animals and shows how they cope up with the current situation and surrounding. In Uganda today demand for , there is increasing pets as many urban individuals find much comfort in pets more than humans. This study was conducted to evaluate the status of animal welfare in cats. 84 pet (dogs/cats) owners participated in dogs and this study, these brought their pets to Kiram Veterinary clinic, Ggaba was based on the five between Dec 2021 and January 2022. The evaluation freedoms and also to animal welfare. In this study, it w determine the attitude and awareness of as found out that (71.4%), of the pet owners were aware/heard of animal welfare though they did not specifically about in detail. Among the freedoms discussed was that of know what it was all hunger and thirst where 75% and 53.3% of the respondents fed their pets to homemade food and gave water and biltum, respectively. Majority (56.7%) of the respondents employed 3 disease control measures that is routine vaccination, regular deworming and timely treatment. It was found that worms are the major stumbling issue with over (58.3%) as compared to parvovirosis and other bacterial/viral diseases. (68.3%), reported having organized kennels for their pets especially for dogs which were always cleaned twice a day . The results obtained show that most of the respondents knew about animal welfare and were practicing it though not to the recommended standards especially as regards the freedoms. This thus necessities sessions that can be conducted to educate them on basis of animal welfare to see to it that welfare of their pets is improved.
