The purpose of this study is to assess women participation in the coffee supply chain in Kalungu district. The objectives were; to characterize women who participate in the coffee supply chain in Kalungu District, to examine the roles women play in the coffee supply chain in Kalungu District and to assess challenges women face in participating in the coffee supply chain in Kalungu district. A case study design of qualitative data was used. The researcher used cross sectional research design. The target population of the study was the 4,176 Households involved in the coffee supply chain in Kalungu District. The study involved primary data which was gathered using self-administered questionnaire. Secondary data to strengthen data from primary sources was obtained by reading text books, periodicals, journal publications, internet, on coffee supply chain and women participation documents, annual reports, and scholarly articles among other sources. The study has shown that there are several undeserving characteristics of women in the coffee supply chain. On the finding of the role of women in the coffee supply chain, it is proved that women are big players in farm management, this cuts across the globe as suggested by other studies, and another revelation is that women act as source of labor in the supply chain especially the farms and at processing units. The study found out that women indeed face several challenges while they participate in the coffee supply chain. Prominent among the challenges are; limited mobility, this challenge denies the women a chance to explore more opportunities in the coffee sector. There is no doubt that women play an important role in coffee value chains globally. At the producer level, they participate throughout the production, marketing, selling coffee and negotiations are some of the areas where women are taking a lead of recent. It is recommended that government should consider expanding the existing capital sources for women to enable them get a competitive advantage over men who have more access to financing. Gender equality needs to be put as policy in the coffee sector; this allows equal access and non-discrimination adherence across the supply chain. by this women will be empowered to approach any opportunity that was presumably available for men only.en_US
