dc.description.abstractThe purpose of the study was to investigate the reading habits of pupils at Mackay Memorial Primary School, and later design and propose a reading habit improvement plan for Mackay Memorial Primary School. the objectives of the study were to; Identify reading materials at MMPS, determine reading habit improvement activities, identify challenges facing the improvement of reading activities and propose a reading habit improvement plan. The study was qualitative in nature and engaged a sample size of 12 respondents which included teachers, administrators and library staff selected purposively and engaged through individual interviews, observation and document review methods of data collection. The study found out that, the reading material preference at MMPS among others were Curriculum text books, Class-work books, Drama and Pictorial books, Exam preparation books, Novels, Poems, Short texts, Newspapers and Children study magazines. The reported activities that play the most important role in improving the pupils reading habits at MMPS were Spelling exercises, Class writing and reading, Reading competitions, Library reading activities, Cultural enrichment and Advocacy for personal involvement etc, The reported challenge limiting the improvement of reading habits were among others Limited reading facilities, limited access to facilities, Reluctance from teachers, Reluctance from parents, Reluctance learners, Reluctance support administrators and Negative attitude towards learning. The study concluded that; there is quite an extensive platform and exposure of pupils in reading given the different reading preferences and activities reported, the challenges hindering reading habit improvement relate to financial limitations and reluctance from stakeholders. Reading affects the pupils' way of life academically, socially, and inspirationally. Reading can be improved through collective efforts from school staff, administrators, library staff and pupils. The study recommended that: a reading habit improvement plan should be designed to improve the reading habits of learners at MMPS as a way of remedying the challenges.en_US
