dc.description.abstractThe study on the utilization patterns of bamboo was carried out adjacent to Echuya Central Forest Reserve in Ikamiro Parish Muko Sub-County Rubanda District. The aim of the study was to examine the utilization patterns and challenges associated with the utilization of bamboo from Echuya Central Forest Reserve. The specific objectives were; 1] to examine the current uses of bamboo; 2] to identify the constraints to utilization of bamboo; and 3] to identify strategies for enhancing sustainable utilization of bamboo. Methods of data collection included interviews, questionnaires and focus group discussions. The results show that the uses of bamboo to the surrounding communities such as firewood, fencing and construction poles. Constraints to utilization of bamboo include lack of awareness about the resource, inadequate technology, and market-chain systems for bamboo product, absence of strong policy frameworks and institutional set- ups and depletion of the resource base. The strategies are the existing national and international interest in appropriate utilization and development of bamboo. The government, non-Governmental organizations, local leaders and other stake holders should put up measures that can promote good working relationship between the local people and the forest management hence paving way for sustainable forest management and collaborative forest management.en_US
