Man’s use of charcoal extends down from the ages of human history. Nowadays, charcoal supplies about 95% of the domestic and commercial cooking energy need in developing countries including Uganda. The study assessed the drivers of charcoal use in Hoima district by identifying the forms of energy used, quantifying the amount of charcoal consumed by each household and factors influencing Charcoal. The study employed survey method of data collection .Cluster sampling was used were by villages were divided into a group of rural villages and urban villages in Businsi Division. Key informants interviews and questionnaire were the tools used during data collection which was entered into SPSS and analyzed in descriptive statistics and cross tabulation. A sample of 60 respondents was randomly selected from two villages; Kasasa and Kasingo selecting 30 respondents from each village to participate in the study. They were interviewed on their views. The results showed that, the most forms of energy used in Kasasa were Firewood (40%), Charcoal (60%), and Kerosene (33%) and the most forms of energy used in Kasingo village were charcoal (83.3%), electricity (46.6%) and kerosene (23%). The study also revealed that most respondents from Kasasa consumed and charcoal in a basin (60%) and most of them where females (72.20%) and most respondents in Kasingo (30%) bought and consumed charcoal in one sack and 33.3% bought and consumed charcoal in a basin most of them were females (66.70% and 80%) respectively .Do not produce a lot of smoke, easy to store, availability, and simple to use were the most factors influencing charcoal use. However 78.90% of the respondents in Kasasa said charcoal is easy to store and availability was the mostly given my respondents from Kasingo village (54.20%). In order to reduce on the level of charcoal consumption, there is a need to increase awareness among people especially in rural areas about the existence of other forms of energy used for cooking such as solar and LPG gas, reduce on the both electricity cost and the cost of electric cooking appliances, sensitizing people about the use of briquettes made out of organic matter and reducing on the cost of other forms of energy.en_US
