A Research report submitted to the department of Adult and Community Education in partial fulfillment of the requirement for the award of degree of bachelor of Adult and Community Education of Makerere University.en_US
The purpose of this research report was to give a clearer understanding of the students’ abilities and challenges beyond just access to technologies and eLearning facilitation. The study intended to achieve the following objectives: To analyze students' perceptions of eLearning during the Covid-pandemic, to examine what eLearning tools and technologies were used to support teaching and learning during covid-19 and to analyze challenges students faced during the covid -19 pandemic. The study employed a qualitative case study design with a sample population of 28 participants including MasterCard Foundation administrators, SAMAK leaders and cohort 5 and 6 students. The data collected comprised both primary and secondary data. It was mainly responses from the key informants through an interview guide, document reviewing and a Focus Group Discussion on the exclusive eLearning experience of students during the pandemic. According to the findings, the study revealed that students were already exposed to this form of learning but were not mentally and physically prepared for such abrupt learning. The students mostly engaged in learning through MUELE, google meet, WhatsApp and zoom platforms using personal computers and smartphones as gadgets. Their eLearning experience to a large extent was not a good one due to lack of internet, network, lack of power connection, domestic work at home, feelings of isolation, and delayed eLearning support from the Foundation. The positive bit of eLearning during the pandemic was that students managed to explore and learn how to use different platforms as well as MCF launched an eLearning initiative project. In conclusion, it was noted the eLearning allowed for continuity in learning during the pandemic, despite notable challenges. While the MCF supported scholars in eLearning preparedness, they encountered several challenges which affected their performance. The study recommends Makerere University to allocate more time for preparation of any new learning initiative, provide more effective and efficient ICT training and support to the students and facilitators. On the issue of power, network and internet, the government in collaboration with other institutions should improve and extend such services to remote areas. The Mastercard Foundation as well should fasten on the disbursement process and prioritize the training of lecturers. Also, eLearning training for scholars should be made mandatory for all to benefit from the training.en_US
