dc.description.abstractthe purpose of this study was to examine strategies that small and medium hotels in kampala use to retain workers that are trained on job. the general objective of the study was to contribute to the strategies that small and medium hotels use to retain workers that they train on job. the specific objectives were; to find out the different categories of workers in small and medium hotels, to establish the reasons employees leave after on job training’ and to examine the strategies that are used by hotel leadership to retain best on job trainees. this was carried out in small and medium hotels in kampala like royal suites, makerere Guest house, crystal suites bugolobi as well as The Athena hotel found out categories of workers such as cooks (18.4%), room attendants (15.3%), waiters, waitresses that are mainly employed. reasons for leaving were feeling conflicted (13.8), looking for better opportunity (10.7%).absence of appreciation, low job satisfaction, emotional exhaustion and Poor working conditions lead to job dissatisfaction which gave rise to creation of work retention strategies like promoting social functions (27.7%), creating strong commitment (26.2%), compensation, work life balance, creating enhanced work environments ,understand why people leave and stay, encourage open communication and encouraging professional relationship which the manages strongly agreed with to reduce staff turnover. the researcher used both descriptive and cross-sectional survey research designs with a sample size of 65 employees of hotels in kampala, data was analyzed using tally and frequency tables where conclusions were drawn from, the key recommendations were need to improve and implement the retention strategies fully to makers feel comfortable with the available standards, viewing employees as internal customers, encourage open lines ofen_US
