dc.description.abstractAnaerobic digestion of organic by-products is a key technology for producing high-value bioenergy in form of biogas. Bio-gas is a clean and renewable energy source that is produced from biomass. However, the supply of easily degradable biomass namely cow dung and agricultural residues is limited and limits wider adoption of biogas in certain areas of the country. In this experiment; bio gas was produced by the co-digestion of chemically treated Pinus Caribaea sawdust and cow dung. The Pinus Caribaea sawdust was pre-treated with liquor to delignify sawdust. Thedelignification was carried out at 0.25M and 0.50M, liquor concentrations. The experiment was also investing on which co-digestion ratio of sawdust to cow dung that produces much bio-gas. The dried pre-treated Pinus Caribaea sawdust was then ground using the blender. TheIndependent digestion of sawdust and cow dung were the controls. The experiment had 18 bath digesters and the digesters and their contents were later placed in an incubator set at 37 degrees and the experiment was monitored for 30 days. The biogas was collected daily at an interval of 24 hours using a gas syringe. Results from the Pinus Caribaea sawdust pretreated at 0.25 molar concentration of liquor reveal that, when sawdust and cow dung were digested independently, they produced a cumulative bio-gas of 1425.7ml, 26.5% methane, 1682.0 ml and 52.5% methanerespectively. The 2SD:1CD had a cumulative bio-gas of 1499.0ml and 37.5% methane, 1SD:2CDhad a cumulative bio-gas of 1809.25ml and 60.5% of methane and this co-digestion ratio was the highest performer in this treatment Results from the Pinus Caribaea sawdust pretreated at 0.5 molar concentration of liquor reveal that, when sawdust was digested alone, it produced a cumulative bio-gas of 940.05ml, and had 31% methane. Cow dung digested alone had a cumulative bio-gas of 1571.5ml and 60% methane, anaerobic co-digestion had the following results, 1SD:1CDhad a cumulative bio-gas of 1628.75 ml and 66% methane, 2SD:1CD had a cumulative bio-gas of 1463.37ml and 41.5 % methane, 1SD:2CDhad a cumulative bio-gas of 1859.0ml and 71 % of methane and this co-digestion ratio was the highest performer in all the treatments treatment. The collected data was then analyzed using Excel and Minitab software, in a number of analytical tools like averages, standard deviations, analysis of variance and t-test. Results show that the Pinus Caribaea sawdust pretreated at 0.5molar concentration of liquor produced the highest cumulative bio-gas (1859.0ml) and cumulative methane of (1338.5ml/gvs) than the treatment at 0.25 molar concentration of liquor that produced a cumulative bio-gas of (1809.25ml) and a cumulative methane yield of (1094.5ml/gvs) The production of bio-gas from co-digestion of sawdust and cow dung is a good method to utilize solid waste mainly sawdust.en_US
